Johnnye
Johnnye is a patient, spiritual man who has faced many challenges.
He worked as a painter, got married and raised three children. But life took a difficult turn when he separated from his wife and lost his mother, both in a very short period of time. Overwhelmed by the loss, Johnnye turned to excessive drinking and substance use, ultimately leading to a conviction for driving under the influence on a revoked license. Reflecting on this period, Johnnye said, “I have regrets. I just didn’t see how it affected me at the time.” Upon his release from prison, he slept in homeless shelters until he found housing.
Johnnye’s chronic health conditions added to his struggles. Diabetes caused cataracts and near blindness, while neuropathy made it difficult for him to stand, sit, or sleep adequately, making a return to work impossible. Rodney Harris, ReVive’s Senior Case Manager, invited Johnnye to our Engagement Center. There, ReVive team members helped Johnnye build a bridge to a new life by helping him apply for food assistance and social security disability benefits, and also helped him obtain a cell phone. The ReVive team also connected him to our on-site Rush medical team and assisted him in scheduling and traveling to numerous doctor’s appointments. The ReVive team continued to support Johnnye during his recent hospital stay and rehabilitation from a below the knee leg amputation.
Grateful for the all the support, Johnnye remarked, “ReVive team members are very kind. They do everything they say they are going to do and more.” Through the compassionate and comprehensive support of the ReVive team, Johnnye has regained stability and continues to contribute positively to the Engagement Center community. Our Programs Are you at risk of becoming homeless?
